Who Is David Kunz?

My name is David Kunz, the independent weather hobbyist behind SFO CommCenter. I enjoy watching Mother Nature unwind. This interest inspired me to launch my own weather-focused online platform.

The Past Experiences That Sparked My Interest in Meteorology

In 1978, I was opening a new restaurant in Raton, NM, and in Sioux City, IA, and stayed in the Midwest from June to July. Being from California, I had never experienced Midwest-type weather conditions before.

During my stay, I witnessed cloud formations that I’ve never seen before in real life, from cirrocumulus and cumulus congestus to stratocumulus opacus and cumulonimbus mamma. The most notable and notorious of these cloud formations was the cumulonimbus mamma, the mother of all the tornadic formations. I also witnessed supercell clouds, which are supercell cloud formations that can form as high as 50,000 feet in altitude under the right conditions.

Throughout that summer, I witnessed the sky open up with patterns of lightning that could scare any newcomer who had never encountered them before. I also experienced thunderstorms with booms that sounded like a 500-pound bomb going off and hail the size of golf balls. Additionally, I witnessed torrential rain that would fill a large bucket very quickly. Such weather experiences fueled my passion for meteorology.

Nowadays, I only capture data readings of the year-round mellow weather in San Francisco, CA. Looking back, I would have captured fantastic weather data if I had my current weather-related hardware while I was staying in the Midwest then.

Personal Life

My past experiences with the Midwest weather and my passion for meteorology inspired me to become a weather hobbyist. This path eventually led me to start the weather-focused online platform SFO CommCenter, where I continue to have a lot of fun unwinding by playing with all my weather-monitoring hardware and sharing the data captured with others. However, I still very much enjoy the restaurant business since it pays all the bills. Currently, I have been managing a steakhouse here in San Francisco, CA, for the last 15 years.
